Toyota TRD Supercharged 1GR-FE

The roots style supercharger used in the 1GR-FE TRD and similar superchargers kits take the torquey Toyota V6 found in Hilux’s and Prado’s to new levels. With a few key modifications, the incredible torque can be stepped up once again to delivery a fantastic driving experience.

1GR-FE Aftermarket Supercharging

There are many kits available for supercharging the 1GR-FE, we will focus on the “roots style” positive displacement superchargers like the TRD or Magnusson style. For the most part, adding a supercharger is a bolt-on operation as long as you have a complete kit.

Some points to keep in mind to get the most out of your supercharger conversion are

Throttle Closing

Depending on your factory ECU, you may have issues with the throttle closing to try limit airflow. This happens due to the stock programming detecting more airflow than expected and shutting the throttle to keep the airflow in range. You probably wont feel this driving around the street but it is happening and will be clearly visible on a dyno run.

The only way to solve this is to run a piggyback which will counter this

Injectors & Fuelling

Factory injectors are going to be maxed out when adding the extra airflow of the supercharger. Many people get away with running stock injectors however when running injectors right at the edge, the risks are higher and you can easily get a lean-out under boost from a failing fuel pump or injector starting to fail. Its recommended to start with a 36lb injector when you convert a NA engine to supercharged.

As these cars are getting on, its also a good idea to change the fuel pump and fuel filter in the process to start out on your new power ladder with fresh components
